Fauna has staying power! Some restaurants hit the market with fanfare, but after a couple of years, the fanfare seems to disappear and the experience becomes lacklustre. Not so with Fauna. I am not sure how many years they have been around (more than 5 I suspect) but the food and the experience, matched by a super ambiance and location, combine to give a great dining experience. I have been going there for many years now and continue to enjoy. Well done Fauna!
Fauna is great. The only downside was the lack of gluten-free dessert! Just seems odd to me that when even chain restaurants offer things that are "gluten-free" or "gluten-free friendly" to be in a nice restaurant that doesn't. This wasn't the first time this has happened to me when I have been a guest at Fauna.
Fauna has style and verve; every detail is thoughtful. The menu and meals are superb.
Absolutely astounding food, lovely cocktails, a beautiful space & excellent service. Brought friends from NYC to visit & they were properly impressed!
Loved the duck with Kimchee. Very original and unusual pairing. Well done. Loved the quick service. Your kitchen is obviously very well organized.
Disappointing relative to the last few times I’ve been (the last few times I’d done the tasting menu whereas this time we ordered from the menu). Too bad had become one of my favourite restaurants in Ottawa but no longer. Service was also lacking considering we had “bad” scallops and it wasn’t handled well
Normally this restaurant is great. But this visit both meals, steak were not so good. The fries were overdone and they had no bokchoy which we think makes this plate. Hard to get the waiters attention
Worth the visit! Really enjoyed the tasting menu. Bison cheeks were amazingly tender and a crab rangoon crispy roll was excellent. Each course was tasty and memorable though nothing was quite perfect- a cold sauce here, bland puree there, desert with no relief from sweet. Just small things that kept me from 5 stars. I look forward to going back, but this place didnt quite meet my very high expectations.
The service was impeccable. The mains were amazing. I found the prices a bit high. I did not enjoy the ham appetizer but absolutely loved the duck main. My main feedback is the price of the wine list. The cheapest bottles are $60 and there are only a few of them. I think this is a limiting price point for many consumers.
The ham dish tastes just like I'm eating cold cut ham from the grocery store. Nothing special about this dish and not worth the money. The red deer tartar is amazing.
The restaurant received very good reviews and was recommended by a colleague, however, our experience was very disappointing. In a party of five, not one of us was satisfied with our meal. The servers also never asked us if we enjoyed our meals. The ambiance was really nice though.
Consistently excellent food, drinks and service. I will continue to return.
Fauna's consistently great, even though the chef was cagey in telling me how he so artfully cut open a quail egg...
Delicious food but way too loud. Difficult to hold a conversation.
I would have rated this restaurant a solid 4 but the ambient noise was excessive and made it difficult to have a conversation.
We had the chef's special 5 course dinner. Each small plate was brilliant, creative and delicious. Cedar oil? Never heard of cedar oil. Babaganoush as a sauce for incredible sampling of beef shoulder. Wine list is very avant garde. Hip spot.
Amazing and varied combinations. Everything we ordered was a gustatory adventure. I eat to live, not live to eat so that is saying something. Definitely a keeper, we will be back and will recommend to friends. Stellar service to match the outstanding skills in the crafting of all offerings. It took all the restraint I could muster not to take tongue to the tableware and glean every last drop.
This visit was disappointing. The eggplant appetizer lacked flavour and the ceviche was also bland.
Other experiences have been great, so hopefully this was a one-off.
Food was undistinguished and expensive. Waiter gave unexcusable wrong description of an item. Item was inappropriate for my diet.
Awesome service!!! Outstanding server !
Food - good all were pleased
Monkfish, ham, eggplant, dumplings
Good for friends , lively
No heirloom tomatoes in tomato heirloom salad. That says it all. The halibut fish cake was overwhelmed by the fried outside so you couldn’t taste the fish. The fish and chips was the winner. Batter not too thick and fish moist and flaky. This was for lunch. Their only rosé wine by the glass is very ordinary. Disappointed
My green curry tofu meal was delicious. However my husbands fish and chips was dry and greasy.
Fauna is totally worth it. These folks know what they’re doing. We had the tasting course with wine pairing. Our server was a sommelier for us-really really great night. I'll come back.
From start to end, I am an absolutely incredible experience at Fauna. The service was impeccable and the food was outstanding. The people that worked there went above and beyond to give my friends and I an amazing dining experience.
Always a great expérience, my guest and I shared a blind tasting menu and 5 small plate, WoW!
Went there for dinner and drinks with a few friends. Even though there was a widespread power outage, they honoured our reservation but could only serve cold dishes. We thought the staff did an amazing job under difficult conditions. We enjoyed the food and our server was excellent. It’s too bad all their plates/bowls are black/dark grey - with no lights we couldn’t see our food at all, which was pretty funny. We will return so we can try some cooked/hot food next time.
One of the best restos in ottawa hands down
The overall look of the restaurant is good, trendy but pretty small. The ambiance was inexistant, very noisy and charged. The waitress was helpfull but very awkward. We ended up only having appetizers and going to another restaurant for the main course. The oysters were good and fresh but the ham was just some shreded cold cuts with a bunch of parmesan flakes thrown on top. I could barely taste the truffle.
Great food and friendly service to match. Our go-to for regular dates. Always something new to try!
Value for your dollar wasn't quite there for the tasting menu or even a la carte items - very small portions. The service was also lacking, we booked for two, but were seated at a table of six, we are asked to switch to the bar because a party of 6 arrived - fortunately we were having dessert. Also at times (e.g.: Water was not filled / no carafe), the bar tenders are too busy fulfilling table orders and are not attentive to those at the bar.
Very noisy, it gets loud as soon as you have more than four people in the room, which is a bit too bad. But, the food is exceptional and service wonderful!
Once again, Fauna has surpassed expectations and has impressed our foodie guests from NYC (not easy!) Excellent service and chef Matthew’a personal touch made the meal even more special.
While great service, food quality is over hyped. Positioned and priced as fairly high end but feels more like decent bistro trying to move towards finer dining without success
Went in with my wife while we were in town and loved it. We shared everything and and let the server guide us with recommendations. My wife told her what she liked as far as drinks and the bar tender whipped something together it was an excellent experience.
Outstanding food, flavours and textures, however, we found the noise level in the restaurant to be very loud, and it didn’t help that our waiter was soft spoken.
We had the ribeye for two and it was excellent. Service was also very good. Would definitely go back if we are in town again.
Wonderful meal with very gracious service. One of my favourite restaurants in town and it never lets me down.
Perfect meal, rib steak was incredible.
