A very Spanish restaurant in a very English setting, London’s Mar I Terra is mere moments from the banks of the Thames within reach of the Globe Theatre, Tate Modern and Waterloo station. Opened in 2000, Mar I Terra is in an imposing old building, formerly a pub built for Southern Railway Company workers but now popular with the hungry and thirsty for very different reasons. Everything here at Mar I Terra is inspired by the most traditional of Spanish tapas bars, from the simple, unpretentious interior with its clean, modern décor, to – of course – the food, which comes straight from the kitchens of Madrid and Barcelona, or rather La Coruna, the home town of Mar I Terra’s chef. Cooked to order with a great attention to detail, the kitchen’s tapas selection includes a great number of popular Spanish dishes ranging from fresh seafood to cured meats and numerous vegetarian options too. Tucked away in an unmarked street is this little gem of a tapas bar. Plenty of choice on the menu, friendly service and a great atmosphere. We really enjoyed our lunch.

Unpretentious setting (it is an old pub) but wonderful, authentic Spanish food and a carefully chosen list of Spanish wines (ranging from good value to eye-watering prices) that you probably won't be able to find elsewhere. Handy for Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe etc., in an area where there is not much else of this quality. We go regularly and love it.

Disappointing experience. Christmas lunch with two colleagues - I work nearby and this restaurant had caught my attention for some time. Although ambiance was pleasant, there is better Spanish food in this city. Most disappointingly was, having a 2pm reservation we weren't informed that the kitchen closed at 2.30. When we attempted to order more tapas, we were informed the kitchen had shut. Neither the manager, nor the 2 waiters serving our table had warned us about this - worse we were blamed for not having ordered on time! No apology or attempt to work something out. Left hungry and disappointed. Won't return.

This is a lovely example of London's well-kept secrets. Looks like a cafe down a side street off Blackfriars Road but serves excellent tapas and has great service. Just short of £70 for a bottle of very good Tempranillo and loads of delicious food for two. Would recommend.

I have been visiting Mar y Terra for some years and love the location, the food and drink, the service and the buzz in the place. Their olives are the best I've tasted anywhere, as are the patatas bravas. It's all good in my opinion whether you visit for lunch, an early evening drink and snack or dinner.

We have been here before and the food is still to very good standards. Every time we have always enjoyed the "tiny sweet/hot green peppers from Galicia". The seafood is fresh; portions are not big though (well, they are tapas) and you may need to order more than usual. The waitress was very helpful despite not speaking too much English, and other waiting staff and the owner are all very friendly. Lovely restaurant and worth going back for decent Spanish food.

Have visited on several occasions and have always enjoyed the delicious Galician food. A bit off the beaten track and away from more popular eateries in the Cut this is certainly worth the extra 5 minute walk. Our last visit however, was completely spoilt by the manager's insistence on packing up before we had finished our meal. We were made to feel as if we were preventing the staff from going home. Not pleasant.
