Osteria Via Stato
So noisy we could not talk! So much oil on the food !!! Way too oily!!
We love coming to this restaurant. Overall it’s one of our favorite restaurants in the city. Food is great. Service is great. Drinks are great. I’d change nothing about this restaurant. They also have a great vegetarian selection and a great wine list.
Great food and wonderful service. We also appreciated the birthday dessert on the house.
We love to come for the “Dinner Party” - which starts off with roasted garlic in balsamic & oil on their wonderful bread. The start also included white bean salad, polenta with duck ragu, and my favorite potatoes in aoili. They fry the potatoes so they are crunchy outside and soft inside which are wonderful, and then they add aoili to it to make them spectacular! That’s the start of this party! Then we had a wonderful pasta with spinach and creamy tomato sauce. The main entrees were every bit as good - the short rib was amazing, along with the trout with artichoke and spinach. Overall a very memorable meal!
Good food, pleasant ambiance. Bathroom needed serious cleanup.
Phenomenal food! Well done
Wonderful food. Real Italian. Fabulous crusty bread as well. Great wait staff.
A lovely cozy restaurant! There are 2 restaurants-one is a bar and pizza restaurant, perfect place for a casual pizza, sandwiches, salad, etc, with a cozy and rustic ambiance-perfect for a cold winter night. The pizza has a very thin crust-delicious! There is a more formal restaurant connected which is lovely, great atmosphere, very cozy with excellent service and unique menu with great food. Our dishes were excellent! I had the trout with sauteed spinach and mashed potatoes, the trout was outstanding! My husband had the shrimp and pasta dish and loved it. The bread basked was filled with very crusty sour dough bread served with balsamic vinegar/oil and we also received a complimentary starter of baked onion topped with tasted like cheddar cheese-very good. Again, the restaurant was perfect for a beautiful dinner in a cozy, quiet and lovely restaurant. Our server was great, very attentive and made it an extra special dining experience. We will definately go back again and again when visiting Chicago!
Great menu! Fabulous service. Very attentive staff. Plenty of great wines for all tastes. Will be back!!
Honestly one of my favorite places to go for Italian food when I'm in Chicago!!
This is my second visit, while attending an annual professional conference nearby. Our group had a round table in the corner this time; much nicer than the rectangular table in the middle of the room last time. The food is reliably tasty and well-prepared. We would rate it not quite outstanding, but excellent. Service is professional and friendly. The atmosphere is warm and lively. Recommended.
Great place to eat, a must try if you’re in the area
Excellent, cozy, very nice, good food, we had great time.
Really enjoyed the service, but unfortunately our dinner experience was just ok.
The food was very good and the service was even better, comparable to the very finest places we have ever dined.
Great food and service at a reasonable price
Dined here two nights in a row because the menu looked so good.
Night 1: seafood linguine with diavalo sauce. Good sized portion with shrimp, scallops and calamari. The sauce had just enough heat to be flavorful and not overbearing. My dining partner had the seafood stew and loved it. My only knock is their signature old fashioned cocktail is way too sweet.
Night 2: scallops. The scallops were cooked to perfection and were buttery smooth. And he sauce was sooo good...hard to describe the taste, but it was rich, velvety and tasty.
This place is on my permanent go-to list for a River North Italian.
Overall very good. Server very helpful. Food delicious.
Osteria via Stata is a surprise. Located at the corner of State St. and Ontario, this Lettuce Entertain You restaurant is a repurposed use of the space formerly used by Papagus (a LEY restaurant that I thought was very good when it first opened), and is a big space divided in three dining rooms, one by the bar, one to the right of the bar, and a third room near the kitchen entrance, plus a small private party room that looked like it could hold about 20-39 people.. Dark wood tables with comfortable chairs are placed in such a way as to prevent overcrowding.
The reason I was surprised is that I was expecting a sort of nondescript meal of standard Italian fare, similar to the uninspired offerings at Saranello’s the LEY restaurant in Wheeling. Osteria elevates its game. Bread from a large Tuscan loaf is served with a small plate of roasted garlic in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Take your fork and mash the glove of garlic, dip in the oil mix and spread the garlic on the bread. Yum. We ordered a plate of long stemmed artichokes, deep fried in a light batter served with a dusting of Parmesan and a lemon aioli, an excellent start that was enough to give a couple of quartered pieces to the four of us. My wife and I split a tasty (but at $11.95, pricey) Caesar salad. J*** had the pan-seared lake trout, a nice portion served with artichokes, spinach and brown butter. I had the Hunter stew, a Tuscan delight of quail, roasted duck, and a house made sausage served from a small Dutch oven. I will come back just for this dish!
Service was competent, and we left feeling very satisfied and full. I can’t comment on desserts since we did not have them, but I would suspect that they would not disappoint.
Not sure what the issues were, but our food took a long time to be prepared, orders corrected and delivered to us. We were initially seated in the pizzeria area rather than the dining room, which was corrected. Everything seemed to be in slow motion as the bread, drinks, refills of tea took and our corrected entrees took a very long time to actually arrive. The server did have the manager come to our table and apologize for the poor service and mistakes that had been made, offering free deserts and providing the entrees as complimentary. We have dined here numerous times and this was our first poor experience. The staff made a concerted effort to resolve a poor experience.
Service was friendly and helpful. Food was quality and tasty. Great time!
Even though we had a reservation we had to wait for 15 mins before we got the table. Then our host took us to a wrong table and we had to wait for another 8 mins before we got the table which was a little tight for 8 people
Really great tasting food
And I have recommended it.
My meal was, as always, excellent.
Greeted by a lovely hostess immediately, recognized our reservation and seated right away. Service throughout was impeccable, never an empty water glass. Panzanella salad appetizer, delicious! Chicken Marsala, delicious. Only shortcoming- thought the menu was limited for Italian. The dining room was lovely and intimate. Would recommend wholeheartedly!
It was a pleasure to have you, Jilly. Thank you for the great review!
The food is always delicious (the filet mignon is my go-to entree) and the fresh baked bread with olive oil and roasted garlic cloves is irresistible. The service is always top-notch, water glasses are always kept filled and the server checks in regularly. Osteria Via Stato is one of my favorite restaurants and one I visit regularly and frequently recommend to friends.
Thank you for your kind words, Mercur! We hope to see you again soon.
Pre play food
Great ambiance, service, food. Excellent suggestions from server. Convenient north River location.
We are so happy you enjoyed your time with us! Thank you for the kind words!
Food was very good. Server was arrogant which was not appreciated. Tried to tell me about wines, drop it, I am a wine school graduate. Atmosphere was also fun.
Hey Scott, we messaged you about your review.
Good night overall - hard to give 5 stars when I know of ma and pop Italian places in Chi with better food
We have been to this restaurant over 10 times in the past and never had an experience as bad as this. The food took forever to get out to us, our waiter was nice but not very responsive, the busboy kept reaching over us to clear things off the table even though the next course had not appeared, and there was only 1 valet parking cars. I hope this was just a glitch but it was a miserable meal. I hope they get their act together.
Hello! We sent you a private message to further discuss your experience.
Our server was great. We were at Osteria a few weeks ago and it was not so great, food was cold and we couldn’t get a hold of our server. Tonight it was great. Food was prompt, server was attentive. Great show of what the restaurant is.
Thank you, Kimberly for trying us again and for your kind words!
Wonderful Rosh Hashanah feast. Everything top notch.
Thank you and happy new year!
The food was great! I was surprised the though that the waiter did not bring me a slice of cake or something because he knew it was my birthday celebration.
The place is very busy on a Friday night, so I suppose the service suffers. Wait staff was friendly, but not attentive to our water , bread replenishments requests .
Incredible service, great environment, and outstanding food! The family style dining is a huge draw and feels very authentic to traditional Italian style eating. Great for anniversaries and other celebrations!
Excellent cuisine. Watching the people from outdoor table a plus
Went to Osteria for Sunday brunch. The food selections were plentiful and great! I was a little disappointed I couldn't pour my own OJ in the mimosa, but not the end of the world. We also thought it was a little bit expensive based on other brunch buffets we had been to in the past. Overall, super tasty and enjoyed the experienced. We will be back.
Absolutely delicious! Will be back very soon
