Das Chumley's wurde in den 1920ern vom IWW-Mitglied Leland Chumley als Flüsterkneipe gegründet. Ursprünglich kehrten berühmte Schriftsteller wie Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, Alan Ginsberg und zahlreiche andere Autoren, Dichter und kreative Typen gerne auf ein Gläschen ein. Ihren literarischen Fähigkeiten verdankt Greenwich Village seinen Ruhm, denn Auswärtige strömten scharenweise herbei, um die Großschriftsteller in dieser mehrstöckigen Bar ohne Aufschrift anzutreffen. Neun Jahre nach dem bedauernswerten Zusammenbruch entwickelte Alessandro Borgognone ein völlig neues Konzept für die 86 Bedford Street, und es entstand ein gemütliches amerikanisches Restaurant mit dem Glamour und dem Geist der 1920er.

I rated this place very good because I've heard that it is and it wasn't really their fault (I guess) but here's our story. For about a week, my pregnant wife was VERY excited about going to Chumley's and eating a burger, which is supposed to be excellent. She mentioned it everyday. About two days before, I received a phone call to confirm and to inquire about any food allergies. I told them that my wife has an allergy to mango, they say no problem. We arrived and sat down (the place is very beautiful) and again we're asked about food allergies and again we confirm her mango allergy and we tell her that she is pregnant. This time the waitress just says, that's odd, and walks away. Now time for the order: my wife orders her burger, the one she was so happy about, only to be told "there's mango in the sauce and she won't take it out," presumably referring to Chef Victoria Blamey. I know my wife was on verge of tears (I can't stress enough how much she was looking forward to this - she's pregnant, we just started new stressful jobs, and we don't eat beef that much) but we ask for a moment to look at the menu again. The waitress returns and my wife has regained her composure and now confidently asks for the duck. "Ok but she won't cook it past medium," says the waitress which is obviously not an appropriate poultry temperature for a pregnant woman. We told the waitress that we unfortunately couldn't stay for dinner. The waitress was understanding and recommended a place on the corner "that's really good... and least it was when I ate there a few years ago" and we were on our way. We ended up having burgers at Minetta Tavern, which were excellent and prepared according to our request. In the end, we had a nice evening. Chumley's seems like it's probably a great place to eat, but not if your pregnant or allergic to mango, and not if you want the food prepared anyway other than the chef's choice. Overall 5/7, would walk out of again.

The new Chumley's is superb. The oyster preparations are imaginative and oh-so-good. Other appetizers are prepared to perfection, particularly the tuna carpaccio, which was new to the menu. The rabbit, which we had for the second time, was delicious - again. Soft shell crabs were spectacular - unfortunately, they were the last of the season. However, the people are what really make Chumley's special - the kitchen is first rate, the managers, servers, bar and every one on the floor is good - really good.

Wonderful experience and delicious food. Once you've eaten a Chumley Burger you'll never be satisfied with a burger anywhere else again. Excellent appetizers and entrees. The perfect place for a special meal.

Should have checked the menu before we went - I'm a vegetarian and the only menu option for me was porridge. I had been here years ago and loved the pre-renovation vibe, so much energy and character. Kind of stuffy and subdued now. Miss the old place.

The menu is very limited. They do not and will not accommodate special requests like a side of French fries even though they serve them with the burger entree. The prices are high and the service was over done yet they under delivered. I made the reservation out of nostalgia for the Chumleys of yore and it was fun to be back and they did a great job with the restoration. However the dining experience was disappointing overall.

We were sadly very disappointed by not only the lack of vegetarian options (not even a vegetarian starter), but by the Chef's inflexibility to agree to serve even the cheese as a starter, because apparently it was a dessert dish. I lived in Paris for a number of years, and while this type of arrogance may just pass in a Michelin star establishment where the chef feels strongly about the menu they offer (although at least a salad would always be on the menu), this is not this type of place. Also, any self-respecting chef should understand that in Manhattan's Greenwich Villlage, not catering to vegetarians and inflexibility on serving a cheese as a starter is a recipe for disaster in the long term. I hope the management will have the understanding to rectify this situation.

Place looks great! Service is lovely. Food leaves a lot to be desired, especially at rather high prices. Duck had a spoonful of puree and a dollop of sauce?? Hamburger had so much going on you couldn't taste anything. Fries were divine. Wine list is very interesting but has no reasonable options.

While I'll always miss the original Chumley's, this version is pretty spectacular - and completely different than the bar it was before. Great decor, impeccable service, small but well thought out menu of chef's specialties (try the lobster eclair and soft shell crab if they're in season/on the menu) and amazing craft cocktails (the Mrs. Easy was delicious) with very fresh and interesting ingredients. There are food options for every palette, from rabbit to cod to vegetarian. More of a special occasion spot since there can't be more than 15 tables inside. Don't bother showing up without a reservation.
