COMAL is a gathering place located in Berkeley’s bustling Arts District, just north of the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. The restaurant is housed in a single-story building (circa 1927) and features a lush, secluded rear patio with a full bar, covered dining area, and al fresco beer garden with fire pit.

Executive Chef Matt Gandin creates earthy, modern interpretations of dishes from throughout Mexico, with emphasis on Oaxaca and neighboring coastal regions. We offer an “all-Mexican” list of craft cocktails, house-made sangritas paired with our curated collection of agave spirits, and a diverse selection of local beer and wine on tap.

Also please note that Comal charges a 20% service charge in lieu of tips.

We had high expectations for this restaurant, but it was disappointing. We ordered the chicken mole tamales — they arrived within a minute, which was surprisingly fast. The portion was decent, but the corn was dry and the mole sauce lacked flavor and any real kick. Overall, the dish was bland and dry. Next, we tried the fish tacos, which came out in under 30 seconds. They were completely flavorless and uninspiring. It’s hard not to wonder if everything was pre-made. Service was friendly.

The guacamole and chips that are served with three different salsas are fantastic. The best. The grilled fish tacos have a great charcoal flavor and are delicious. The cocktail was refreshing and tasty, not sugary. This is our third time and the food and service are consistent.

We did not care for some of the dishes. The meatballs were overcooked and way too lean, lacking flavor. The shrimp quesadilla had improperly cleaned shrimp so that shells from the shrimp were still attached. Our friends had a plate for two of the hanger steak with green beans and sides. Theirs was pretty good and enough for two people. As well, the chipa and Guacamole were super. But like everything in restaurants not cheap. The Guacamole was $15. So it was a mixed bag on the food however, I did not like the automatically 20% tip added to the bill. Our server took care of the orders and did check back on things but had zero personality. I don't think it would be worth a return trip.

Appreciated the attentive service. Indoor dining is not as pleasant as on the patio, in our experience. We ordered a variety of dishes and honestly found them relatively uninspired. The last time we ate here was pre-pandemic, and my recollection is the food was delicious.

We love Comal - every item on the menu is delicious and love their cocktails! The small plates were great to share and we had a larger plate of spareribs that were perfect! Service was great too!
