Doju 〜 a combination of Head Chef/Owner Mika Chae’s hometown Jeollanam-do and Meju, a fermented, Korean soybean block. Meju is the first step for making a number of Korean dishes like doenjang (Korean miso), ganjang (soy sauce) and gochujang (chilli paste). Since Doju is Mika’s first restaurant, Meju is perfectly incorporated into the name and sets the scene for meaningful, passionate food.

Excellent evening in Doju. The food was very good. We ordered multiple dishes with the standouts being the mussels, the sardines, the tuna, wagyu, mushroom main course and the whiting. The Doju potato side and desserts were very good. Reasonable wine list with decent range of prices. Service was attentive without being overbearing. We will recommend the restaurant to friends.

After much anticipation, we finally booked in at Doju restaurant. We ordered the intercostal galbi, a raw fish small plate, the grilled fish, and the lamb gaksu. Overall, the food was okay, but it definitely fell short of expectations. The intercostal galbi was probably the highlight—a great piece of meat with a really nice marinade. The radicchio was a refreshing change from your usual Korean ssam. I didn’t think the raw fish dish was well balanced—there was too much citrus, which overpowered the flavour of the fish. The grilled fish, on the other hand, was quite good. We both really enjoyed it. The lamb gaksu was just okay. I think we were expecting something different. It felt more Chinese than Korean, which wasn’t what we were hoping for. The service felt a little forced—too put-on and lacking warmth. Not sure if it was just an off night, but it came across as a bit awkward, to be honest. Ambience-wise, the space is really nice. It’s in an interesting location, and overall the vibe and noise levels were great. What probably frustrated us most were the portion sizes. They’re quite small, and when you factor in the price, the value just isn’t there. For what you’re paying, it didn’t feel worth it. So yeah, not racing back. I think there are better places in Melbourne doing similar food, with more generosity and heart.

Fantastic service and food. Unique and tasty cuisine. The restaurant also accommodated a guest of mine for allergies and explained everything really well. I’ll be bringing back clients soon!

Best service, staff was very friendly, kept checking on us. The restaurant was very nice, and foods was amazing. Enjoyed our time there, will be back. Wine selection was good. We even got free foods when the kitchen closed - very impressive that we get this service at Doju. Will be back.

Absolutely incredible start to finish. We had the chefs banquet and I couldn’t recommend it more highly. Our favs from our banquet were the focaccia, smoked muscles, and of course the steak main. This is the kind of food that reminds you of the good, creative and significant impact of food. Dom and the team had truly spectacular service with incredible attention to detail. We can’t wait to visit again.

What an amazing dining experience to celebrate my friend’s birthday! The food was so well done and tasty. The cocktails were different but absolutely delicious. Our waitress was amazing and gave us the best recommendations.

I celebrated my 21st birthday at Doju. From the get go we were told we had a strict 2 hour seating and was told not to feel rushed which was fine. However, as a table of 5, we were still deciding how much to order and what to order and yet, the waiter questioned us 5 times within 10-15 minutes if we were ready to order, when we clearly were still looking at the menu. The food was amazing though. However, the feeling of being rushed was very adamant when the moment a dish looked finished, a waiter would clear it instantly even though there was still remaining food on it. Considering the amount each dish cost, this was unpleasant. The waiter was so quick that we were unable to ask for the plate back. Then, I brought a cake to celebrate my birthday with specific instructions. Not only did the waiter bring the wrong cake with the wrong name to my table, they also disregarded the instructions I gave. This was very awkward for me and it shows their lack of care and attention to my table. When we were taking photos of the cake and celebrating my birthday, the waiter immediately told us we only had 10 minutes left. While taking photos of the cake, the waiter interrupted us to give us the bill. When I was doing the first slice of the cake, the waiter asked us if we were ready to pay. And finally, while I was eating the cake, I had to settle the bill with cake in my mouth. We lost a lot of time considering they brought out the wrong cake to begin with, still forced to pay a $10pp cake fee and yet we were kicked out before our full 2 hour seating, with 7 minutes remaining. I am very disappointed in the service and lack of care. Rather than celebrating my birthday with my friends, we were all in distressed due to the constant reminder that we had to leave and ultimately left with a bitter taste.
