O-Ku - DC
Have wanted to try O-Ku for quite some time but unable to get reservations! Clearly weekends are very busy - so Tuesday night it was and it was perfect. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, kind and very knowledgeable about the overall cuisine as well as specific menu and wine items and the environment was relaxed with a simple beautiful look and feel. I look forward to going again and introducing more friends! Sticking to week nights - I can imagine weekends is a different experience and we loved the calmness of a week night.
Food was outstanding. Service was great. We arrived early which may have contributed to getting our food relatively quickly. Will definitely go back. Right now I think O-Ku offers the best sushi in DC. Pricy but worth it.
The food and service were outstanding. The restaurant is very big so you can choose if you want quiet or want to be closer to the action. I plan on going back.
Happy hour is a great deal with $3 off of three delicious cocktails (tried them all) and half off delicious sushi. Will definitely be coming back!
From the moment we entered through the exquisite front door our O-ku experience was a total pleasure. Our server, Josh, was the BEST! It was our first time in the restaurant and he made us feel welcome and appreciated. He reviewed the menu with us and made us aware of the happy hour specials (5-7pm). His attention throughout our extended meal was always on point and unobtrusive. We tried a number of selections from each part of the menu and were blown away as each new course was delivered. Sitting at the bar in front of the robata grill was like a seat at the chef’s table. The meticulous and artistic preparation of each dish reflected the high values of manager, Kimbrall Brienza whose presence and hospitality was obvious throughout the evening.
The food recommendations!
Makimono (50% off during happy hour) - Yuzu Tuna & Soft Shell Crab
Small Plates - Shiu Mai, Tartare, and BLACK MAGIC (do not overlook this one it was a highlight of the evening)
Robata Grill - Yakitori - after spending 3 months in Japan this year, my son needed to try this classic. O-ku has elevated this dish with AMAZING layers of flavor. You may be fooled by the fact that it is one of the less expensive items in this section, I will order this every time I return!
O-KU Signature Nigiri - “Kindai” Bluefin Otoro, Hokkaido Scallop “aburi style”, Wagyu
Sashimi - Tasmanian King Salmon, Madai, Unagi, Anago, Aburi Salmon
Dessert - well, we had the tres leches. Let’s just say, the meal was so incredible that the dessert had a pretty high bar to meet. It didn’t rise to the occasion. Neither did it spoil the night. But this isn’t a dessert destination.
This atmosphere was beautiful and even the playlist was on point. We will remember this meal for a very long time.
Excellent service by a very knowledgeable wait staff. Food was delicious, cocktails were unusual and tasty and we were allowed to eat dinner at our own pace.
We sat at the bar which is so cool. Our waiter was knowledgeable about every item on the menu and gave us great recommendations! Some of the best fish I’ve had in dc.
I celebrated my birthday here with a friend and we were treated so specially from the moment we walked in. Very friendly bartender who created a cocktail with liquors we wanted. The food was outstanding and the manager on site was kind enough to bring over b-day champagne, complimentary sea scallops from the sushi bar, and a card that the staff who was working that night signed for my b-day. Our food wasn't rushed and the waiter made great suggestions since it was our first time. You MUST try the short ribs - they were outstanding.
Val took care of us at the bar and he was phenomenal
NYE dinner with friends. We sat at the bar and our bartender was amazing!!! Will definitely be back for happy hour
Food and ambiance is excellent; however, service was slow on the night. Hopefully they find their footing since it was not busy at the time we ate. Makimono rolls are excellent, but the size of other items seemed relatively small for the price.
The best part was having amazing customer service in American Sign Language! Just about everyone signed something at least, like "This is a gift" (free appetizer!) and "Thank you for coming!" Our waitress is actually an ASL interpreter and it was great to finally "hear" the specials. The honey tart is to die for! Love the combination of flavors.
O-Ku is a “must do” for sushi in DC. It came highly recommended, and did not disappoint. The service was outstanding, the food exquisite, and the experience awesome.
We’ll definitely be back.
Loved it! Interesting decor, great atmosphere, spacious, awesome food and service!
Totally recommend it!
The sushi is awesome. I like the grilled chicken. Service was outstanding.
Great spot, bar upstairs is super cozy.
Great service. Very professional and accommodating.
I took my Fiancé here for her birthday and I could not be more satisfied with my decision. The service was amazing and the staff treated her to 3 complimentary Nigiri rolls (which were amazing) and also treated us to a glass of champagne and gave her a birthday card signed by the staff. We tried a variety of foods from sushi rolls to lobster tail and it was all cooked and seasoned to perfection. 5 well deserved stars for O-Ku DC!
Perfect in every sense!
Think the world of Luke, who has been an outstanding and gracious server! Definitely one of the reasons we keep going back. Also, the food is amazing.
This place is Amazing the upstairs bartender Val was amazing he really made everyone feel comfortable. I set up this bday dinner like two or three weeks ago to make sure everything was perfect and he nailed it answered any and all questions. In addition, he makes some excellent drinks and suggestions for food (I’m going back Friday just to give him an appreciation tip, my experience was outstanding).
Had an amazing dining experience at O-Ku and I highly recommend them. Sitting at the sushi bar watching them work the cutting boards and the binchotan grill was an awesome experience. Go check them out and tell them KJ sent you (@k8cancook); it is likely to be the best sushi you’ve had in some time.

Terrific sushi and other Japanese treats. Everything was delicious. Saki was amazing. The service was attentive and likeable.
Great staff. Tasty food. Didn’t love our combo roll but everything else was excellent. Ask to sit in the back.
Amazing staff, food and service. Top tier sushi dining. My family will certainly be joining you guys again for another experience..can’t wait!
Interesting take on traditional Japanese cuisine. The food was delicious. I also enjoyed the Vietnamese Tiramisu for dessert (yes.... it's not very Japanese, but it was awesome!). Good selection of sake and Japanese whiskey.
I was browsing for an ideal location for dinner with my wife and a friend who I had not seen since college. The environment was great and the server Jenna was excellent, she made a few suggestions that I was truly grateful for.
Came for a bday dinner. My bdays not till Thanksgiving, so making another reservation for a second bday dinner there. Love the food and the service was very accommodating.
Amazing sushi! Hands down the best in the DMV. Run do not walk and try it! Amazing drinks and sake as well. Beautiful space, friendly staff. A little expensive but worth every penny.
I love the atmosphere of this place. There's a good amount of seating, the sushi is fantastic, and the staff is phenomenal. It's a fun place to dine (especially with friends) in a fun location near Union Market.
Great team! Friendly, professional and courteous. Thanks for a lovely evening.
Very slow service which was disappointing. Brought friends who hadn't been before - don't know that I will be back for a while.
The food here is spectacular. Unfortunately, despite having a reservation, we were seated in the back corner of the sushi bar staring at the prep station. Our waitress took our appetizer and drink orders. We ordered cocktails and two apps. Cocktails an one app came out but our wagu beef croquettes took over 45 minutes to come out. During that time our waitress didn’t check in at all so we weren’t able to get a second round of drinks or order our entrees. Finally we flagged down the manager and he was able to comp the late apps and a round of drinks. Service generally spoiled what was otherwise a delicious dinner.
Overall we had a good experience but there were some issues. I’ll start by saying we never complained but the staff knew there was an issue and did everything to fix it without us asking.
Great and innovative food, terrible service. Mentioned to a friend and she had the same experience.
The food was amazing. I haven't had this good of sushi in a LONG time. Service was super nice and honestly don't have a single negative thing about this place to say. Perfect.
The food was delicious and the service was great! Ask for Amelia and don’t leave without ordering the Sea bass!
Great innovative Japanese cuisine, service & atmosphere. Not inexpensive, but worth it.
