Über dieses Restaurant

  • Happy Hour
SakeSan is a sushi bar and bistro located in the Inner Richmond area. While its recipes adhere closely to the classics that made them famous, the decor and atmosphere inside are distinctly modern. Intriguing checkerboards of dark wood line the walls and Japanese writing glowing with back-lit neon lights. SakeSan is not your average quick sushi restaurant, but something much more refined and stylish. Off the robata, or grill, guests can order a savory rack of lamb, grilled calamari, chicken skewers, bacon wrapped asparagus and many other delicacies. The sushi list takes up a full page of the menu at SakeSan and varies from simple two or three ingredient rolls to complicated, gorgeous masterpieces. Daring diners should have a go at The Gambler, a white tuna roll topped with salmon and pineapple with spicy mayo and a special sauce. The catch? One of the eight pieces is extremely spicy.

Decent, mediocre sushi in the richmond that doesn't break your wallet. Don't expect anything fancy or extremely fresh, but its sufficient enough for days my fiance and I are craving sushi and don't feel like spending $100pp for a quick dinner.

Needed to make early reservation for 5:00 based on enticing website. Lots of Japanese restaurants available, many under a 'moderate' scale, so SakeSan was (to me) a hopeful newcomer. My impressions/experience are primarily based on my (relatively early) time of dining : No problem parking on busy shopping area Clement St. at that time of evening / Upon entering, could see an appropriate number of early diners and an efficiently-busy wait staff / A couple private, glassed-in dining areas, a larger common dining area, with optional dining @ welcoming bar, and apparently more private dining areas farther back / As a single, was seated between two tables, (cozy, not cramped) / A wall-mounted music video was playing current populars with subtitles (catering to groups is one of their night offerings) / Servers were young, efficient, friendly, knowledgeable, high energy, and attentive (at one point I dropped a chop stick and before completely resettling, a server was delivering a new set). Menu was large/varied enough in both food selection, sakes, cocktails and wines to accommodate most tastes; due to prep time, wait time between dishes was staggered enough not to feel rushed and to allow plenty of table space; quality of food was quite good, fresh, with attention to detail in presentation. Overall the ambiance is "minimal-clean-Japanese" and welcoming. Although an early diner, I could easily see SakeSan as an active night spot, good for groups and special occasions, with a vibrant bar scene. Will have to return for a night dinner, but from my experience, would recommend.

Pay cash or credit. Do not use your debit card. We had a expectedly high bill and they put 3 authorizations on my account all in the amount of the whole bill so a chunk of my account was on hold for a couple days. I'm not Mr. VISA so I don't know why this is the case but they do this with debit cards. Otherwise it wasn't too bad. Food is pretty good. Not my scene really but if you're a 20 something looking for a lively sushi bar scene, this is the place.

SakeSan has been on my to-do list for a while, so my girlfriend and I booked a last-minute table last night. We arrived a few minutes early and were seated on time. Although there were quieter tables free, the hostess seated us at a two-top right in between two noisy tables. Strike one. When the server came to take our drink order, we asked for water and tea. The tea came out piping hot, but so were the mugs that in which they served it. Be careful, tea drinkers, the ceramic mug they chose nearly scalded my fingertips when I first grabbed it. The water didn't come until over 20 minutes later, after we had to ask for it three times. Beverage service: Strike two. We ordered the poke and the sashimi omakase, both of which were delicious. The fish was fresh, high-quality stuff. I really liked the fact that the menu specified that hand rolls could be wrapped in cucumber rather than the traditional nori and rice, because I'm on a low-carb diet this month. So, in addition to the sashimi omakase, we ordered the spicy hamachi jalapeno hand roll wrapped in cucumber. I was impressed with the presentation when it arrived but, alas, the taste was very bland. There was no jalapeno visible in the hamachi and the roll wasn't spicy at all. Zero heat. Strike three. Finally, if you're looking for a quiet, upscale sushi place, keep in mind that SakeSan's decor is... interesting. There's a projection screen in the main dining area, screening distracting Korean pop videos, and the place is lit like a nightclub. Ugh. I wanted to like SakeSan, but I can't recommend it when San Francisco is filled with sushi places that offer better value for money. Both Okina and Yu Zen score higher with me in the Richmond, and Saru in Noe Valley is an exceptional spot for those who don't want to hike out into the fog. If SakeSan shuts off the movie projector during dinner hours and brings the service up a notch, they have the potential to be as good as these other places.

The sushi rolls we got were absolutely delicious. We bought the angry bird and another one that was absolutely delightful. Now our food entrees what a let down. Ugh. I got the seafood yasanabe. What a rip off! There was no flavor at all! I never pour more than a tsp of soy sauce but this dish was so plain it needed it. It was expensive too! I also got the seafood curry. It was watery to the point of being a liquid. Not good at all. It didn't taste like anything. Very DISSATISFIED. This was also a rip off. I'm not sure if we will come back.

The gambler is fun. One of the pieces is veery spicy. I was the "lucky" one who got it. Overall had a great experience with good sushi

A nice find for flavorful sushi, nigiri, specialty rolls, and robata. Pleasant atmosphere, attentive service. Separate rooms available for the karaoke crowd. Price point a little higher than average run of the mill sushi restaurants, but taste is worth it

Fresh/quality cuts of fish, great food presentation and nothing bad to say in the taste department. The happy hour was a great deal and the items they offered were fit for all sushi lovers. It won't disappoint and won't cost you a fortune either!

We celebrated a friend's birthday in one of the private karaoke rooms. It accommodates 12, and is enclosed in glass. This makes it semi-private, which means more fun for all! The setup is one big table and bench seating all around. There's a flat screen TV with the music choices. Singing amongst friends is a blast. The food is delicious, and the service is friendly and attentive. Highly recommended for a party.
