After a quarter of a million pound refurbishment, The Butchers Arms has become one of the most beautiful and acclaimed restaurants in Essex.

The team behind the award-winning Bay Horse in Chelmsford have lovingly restored and renovated the venue, combining modern design with period features to create a bright and airy space.

Masters of molecular gastronomy, the chefs at The Butchers Armse prepare a delicious menu, with each dish cooked freshly from the finest, locally sourced, organic ingredients.

Every weekend the best musicians in the county perform acoustic versions of the latest hits and classics from 9.30pm, providing a great atmosphere and entertaining the friendly clientèle into the night. Sundays mean delicious roast dinners, with a selection of beautifully cooked meats and all the trimmings.

We offer free parking, a large outdoor patio and children's playground area .

Very disappointing meal for Father's Day. Very rude chef & poor quality food. The food was not as described. We will not be returning.

lovely friendly staff and great food - nice selection though didnt see a vegetarian option so maybe check before you go - lovely presentation and service

Having previously visited The Butchers Arms for Sunday Lunch, I was looking forward to going back. However, my Friday lunchtime experience was not so positive. Despite not being busy, we didn't get our food (a salad and a sandwich) until an hour after we arrived and the quality was not what was expected based on previous experience.

This places was recommended to us by a friend who lives locally. We were up for wedding and wanted a lovely Sunday lunch before heading back to London. The food and service were amazing, 3 courses for £20 is incredible value. I had the pork roast and it comes highly recommended. I will make the trip from London again, it would definitely be worth the drive! Had on heart one of the best roast dinners i've ever eaten out. If I could improve one thing it would be to have salt and pepper grinders not shakers, or at least be offered ground pepper, then it would be perfection!

Went for Sunday Lunch and was very impressed. 2 course menu £17, 3 course £20. Sufficient choices of starter, main and dessert. Food quality and quantity very good and excellent service (attentive and good humoured). A little out of the way but definitely one to go back to!

Good food, comfortable and relaxing surroundings. But sadly, that's the only good thing that can be said. Service was so slow. One side dish didn't turn up. A complimentary dish of chips that was offered, also never turned up. Annoyingly, all evening all we could hear was constant apologies being offered to diners. We were left with the impression that that Butchers Arms had recently gone through extensive renovations, and so maybe the aforementioned issues were "teething problems" ?

A real treat. Combination of beef delightful roast potatoes to die for! Staff attentive. Restaurant ambience good. Would definitely visit again and recommend to others. Thank you.

décor was good and so was initial service but then waited at least 30mins for starters. Once this arrived I have to say it was very tasty. It wasn't such a long wait for main meal but I had asked for medium cooked steak and it arrived well done. My husbands rack of ribs although meaty lacked flavour and both our chunky chips could have done with a little more cooking. If the price had been a little better we may be tempted to go back as everyone working there were very pleasant but having visited other restaurants in the area who provide a higher quality meal for a lesser price I think we shall decide against it

We first visited the Butchers Arms a few weeks ago when we were told the oven was broken hence the slow service, as the food was excellent we decided to give them another go. On arrival we joked 'is the oven working today?' we were assured it was. This being the case I have no idea why it took over two hours to produce a two course meal for 3 people......we were so fed up we ended up cancelling our desserts! I'm unsure if the waiting staff are poorly organised - at one point we had our table half cleared and the waitress went off to take someone else's order, or if the kitchen is understaffed and therefore unable to produce more than one item at a time. It really is a shame as the food is amazing quality but I expect a table to be turned round in 2 hours ready for the next service. Sadly we won't be visiting again

Lovely place to eat, the service was good and the staff was polite and friendly, had the chocolate brownie which was amazing will definitely be returning and recommending to friends and family 😃
