It was a birthday celebration and we had a evening.
Food is very good - had the fish cakes - the only thing is it is crowded
Music is awesome there - feels like you are in someone's living room
The Carleton is a wonderful place for live music. Although it is a bar/restaurant, the focus is on listening to the music like a concert venue. The sound quality is excellent. It's great to go to a bar and rerally hear the performers. The food is delicious. They do a terrific burger and scallop appetizer, but I wouldn't order the hanger steak because it is a tough cut. It needs more marinating time. I had to send it back and order something else. Overall we had a terrific evening and we have been here several times. Will continue to support The Carleton for both music and dining.
A wonderful venue for a night out with food and music. It was similar to a house party as the musical show was close and engaging. Great burger and salad and fancy ale. Service was great.
Everything good except ran out of four things tried to order from drink menu told Sat crazy busy but pricey tickets and time to restock for it I would think warranted sure Nine Locks would’ve come through at least - service excellent otherwise
Best venue in Halifax for viewing/hearing talented musicians "up close". The sightlines are good, food/service is great and the audience is there to listen (mostly).
Great as always. Food is wonderful, audience respectful of the artists. Overall great night!
We enjoyed the food, the concert was excellent and the service was very good (especially given how difficult it was for the server to reach us). We were very disappointed with the table placement though. Our reservations were made as soon as the concert was announced, and we got to the venue an hour before show time however our party of two was placed with two other people and our table was less than 4 inches from the stage. Surprisingly it wasn’t too loud, but being under the bright spotlight within inches of the performers spoiled the experience. We would return to the Carleton, but I am not sure I would ever return for a published concert.
I always love going to the Carleton and now I think the food is even better. I had the noodle bowl and loved it. It is such an intimate venue and the live music is a bonus. Coco Love Alcorn is so much fun and energetic.
The scallops are perfection overtime. The service always superb and the music had my heart captured from the first note. :)
I love this intimate and warm space ! Best venue in Halifax .
I like the quiet atmosphere and the food was really good. Had the fish cakes
Fantastic night! The food and drinks kept coming so quickly and quietly! My server knew what I was asking for even though I was whispering and so subtle that it didn’t take away bulgur only enhanced the performance and experience! The show was phenomenal! Daniel Champagne you were amazing! Food was fairly priced actually and more than worth it! Thank you for the much needed date night with my husband!
I took my sister to dine with me at the Carleton and take in the Daniel Champagne show. We both had the salad and while the first few bites were delicious, there was definitely something in the dressing that both of us found too hot/spicy. She didn't say anything at first but waited for my reaction as I am more adventurous when it comes to heat but my mouth felt like it was on fire. Generally speaking, one doesn't expect spiciness from a garden salad and nothing in the description implied it was a hot spicy dressing. We alerted our very sweet server of the problem and she switched out the salads for some yummy frites. The panecotta was absolutely wonderful. The atmosphere , as usual, was great and the entertainment first class. I am very satisfied with how things went.
I love the atmosphere and the service but the meal portions were too small and I left my meal still hungry. The artist showcased was wonderful!
The entertainment is always great. Seating is always first come first served...I had a table booked for two through open table. I show up 15 minutes before my reservation and am taken to a table for six people and am told there are no other tables available, there will be four other people sitting with you. So you can go through the process...but if you want a table ...go early...but do enjoy the show...
I don’t want to harp...the Carlton do a superb job at presenting talent..love it for that.....making reservations...
The Carleton does NOT disappoint. A great place for dining and entertainment. Great food, affordable, comfortable. Top notch entertainment for all genres. This great treasure wins awards, deserving for sure. Make the time to check out The Carleton you will not be disappointed.
Online reservation worked well. However, day before dinner I was asked to confirm and I did, but through out the day I kept receiving messages to please confirm. This morning was the first notice I saw that acknowledged my response.
We found the dining room was cold (early evening). Otherwise the music and overall service was great.
The music was fantastic but I was very unhappy about my table. I booked a table the day the tickets went on sale yet I was not given a table in the listening room. I had to sit on the side and had to strain to see around other patrons. A table of 6 next to us had the same issue. I love listening to music at the Carleton, but if I go out of my way to book early, I expect a better seat. Or I shouldn’t have to pay as much if I can’t be in the listening room. It is not the same experience
I tell so many people about the Carleton. I just love it there!!!!
We had a lovely evening at the Carlton Saturday night. Our server Gerry was fun, knowledgeable about the menu and attentive to our needs throughout the evening. Cannot wait to go back!
Normally The Carlton is phenomenal but on Friday night there was a very disruptive woman in the audience who ruined part of our experience. I saw two other women being told to be quiet by management but this particular woman seemed to be a regular and was allowed to continue being disruptive and disrespectful of the performers to the point that one of the performers told her to shut up. You could tell he was perturbed as were the other performers. I'm disappointed that she wasn't dealt with appropriately.
The food, service and entertainment were top notch as always.
There was one person singing; we liked him, but I think it would have been too loud if there was a group. But that’s what the Carleton does- showcase good music.
We went prior to a Neptune show. Good to have you involved with the Neptune Club
Outstanding venue for great food and the best in live music in Halifax. My date and I went for dinner, drinks and to see the incredible Don Ross in concert. The food was elevated pub, well done but nothing special. I had terrific mussels and so so fish cakes which were a bit oily and over sauced. My wife enjoyed her fried chicken sandwich. We had great service from very affable and capable wait staff. What’s really special about this place is the music. It’s intimate with great sound, and the audience is there to listen and appreciate the talent on stage. I so appreciate the commitment the Carleton has to supporting so many local artists. Check out the line up of shows often, as there is simply no better way to see an artist that you enjoy. It was our long overdue first time and we will be back very soon!
Love this music venue! Great food, atmosphere and sound! Don’t even hesitate if you are thinking of going.
The food, the services and atmosphere at the Carleton are always top shelf. This visit was as always great and the folks there to check out Don Ross likely would agree. Award winning and well deserved, the Carleton does a great job of dinner and entertainment
I was on a lovely date, so was perfect in that sense. Service was just ok because we asked for the steak to be well done (which I am well aware is not the norm, but some ppl cannot do rare, end of story). The server was good, but she was put off at our request and tried to convince us to order rare (like the menu says). Just tell her that it's ok if ppl prefer well done.
Superb food...the scallops and pork belly were amazing. Great service. Excellent music. Cannot wait to return.
Great spot for live shows. We enjoyed the show very much and the food and service was lovely.
Love The Carleton as a live music venue because of the No Talking during the performance rule. However, the noise level otherwise makes it impossible to have a good conversation.
The menu has changed. Really miss full meal options. I ended up having to order the steak frites which was tough and a touch too rare.
Also had cauliflower soup which was tasty but foamy. I don’t understand soup served as foam. Wasn’t hot enough either.
Payed too much for a mediocre meal.
I really want to support The Carleton as the best live music venue in Halifax. Just disappointed in the need to have to arrive very early in order to secure a good table and spend a lot for a soso meal.
We love the ambience.
Our favorite entertainment place.
Amazing, as always. Fantastic music
One of my favourite places in Halifax
Always a great place to catch up with friends, especially if they enjoy live music! We have yet to be disappointed by the Carleton. It’s our favourite date spot too!
Place is very dated. Food was less than mediocre and the service was terrible.
Don’t go if they have live entertainment we were reprimanded and told it is not a “talking bar” when live entertainment is playing you are expected to not speak and listen. Really?
We apologize for your experience with us. Our staff have been spoken to regarding the service and food issues. It is important to explain and clarify your experience of the live music. Because we host a wide variety of events and experiences, guests are highly encouraged to check our website in advance to ensure their expectations match ours. Unfortunately, that night was a sold-out event for a "Listening Room" show, with expectations much like a movie theater and this was not clearly relayed.
We went to the Carleton for dinner and a show. Although Carleton is a Listening Room created for musical events, our table was way back by the door. My husband had to look around the sound guy to be able to see the musician. It took quite some time to even get water, much less a drink. Sitting by the door, there was always activity going on which meant it wasn't quiet listening to the music. I have been many times before inceat much closer to the music where it is truly a Listening Room. If, and it's a big if, we ever go again, we will go hours before in order to be assured a table closer to the stage. We made a reservation for a table three months earlier but still ended up at the back of the bus. Making a reservation obviously doesn't mean anything.
Thank you for your review Mary. I empathize with the situation and unpleasant experience. Unfortunately, the reason we do not reserve specific tables for guests and encourage arriving early for shows is to ensure we do not have late arrivals with a reserved table in front of the stage. This greatly interrupts the musician and experience of the show. We hope to see you again for a better experience and would love the opportunity to ensure that happens.
I enjoyed my evening. We were a group of 3, arrived at the time of our reservation and I was surprised to find the restaurant almost completely full. We shared a table with a couple, which was just fine. However, the restaurant was so noisy, it was impossible to have any conversation ahead of the show.
The show (Dave Gunning, first night) was fantastic and the food was very good too.
Thanks, Carleton for being such a great evening out.
Thank you Katherine! We are aware that the chatter in the room can be overwhelming at times. Our venue is so dedicated to having the best quality of sound carried throughout the entire space, that unfortunately, it also carries chatter and various noises as well! Finding solutions to balance the quality of sound for musicians while offering guests more intimate experiences is an ongoing battle. If a solution for this arrises, you can be sure we will apply it. Hope to see you back soon.
The venue is awesome. We had great seats. The server was really terrific. The food was delicious and Dave Gunning was amazing as usual. Thanks for The wonderful night!
Thank you Dianne! It was a great night, hope you are able to come back soon.
Went for a birthday date to hear Paul St-Amand and his Soul Quartet, couldn’t have picked a better venue or genre for a date night. Food was delicious, service was great, music was amazing.
Thank you Anonymous! Come back soon. :)
The live jazz group was very good, but very loud. That was partly due to the acoustics of the place, and partly due to the amplification. I wish it had all been acoustic ...
A bit overpriced. Next to our table very nosy people so listening to the music wasn't very pleasant.
Inside nice and very comfortable chairs
Hi Mimi Thank you for your review. Sorry to hear your listening experience wasn't very good. We try our best to accommodate all guests' however our "Dinner with music" does not require guests to be quiet during the show. We do, however, offer Listening Room Shows, where loud tables are not tolerated. If you would like to try one of those nights, you can find artist and show date information on our website at thecarleton.ca Kind regards, Amy
