The Cyclist offers something a bit different, a simple menu with great flavours: homemade chicken liver pate and toast was a tasty starter, followed by steak and frites perfectly cooked on the fire, finished off with a marmalade pudding which was delicious and light; my friends enjoyed their affogato too. Plus good quality beer and wines in a cosy space. Coming back to try the fondue and more wines very soon...

We wanted to love The Cyclist we really did but unfortunately this disappointing experience failed on a number of levels. We booked a table on a Saturday evening when homemade burgers were the main item on the dinner menu. Great ! We love a homemade burger. They were obviously cooked to order which was fine with us. However when they arrived it was obvious even before tasting that the two burgers were different. For a start one was a good deal bigger than the other! We tasted each other’s and were surprised to find they also tasted very different with one far far nicer than the other. We found this situation really annoying. One of us enjoyed our meal and the other did not! We mentioned this to the proprietor and cook who told us that he was ‘experimenting’ with two recipes. Fine but serving two at the same table requires consistency and should be the golden rule. To be fair he was very apologetic and said he wouldn’t charge for the substandard burger but, after trouble with the card machine and no itemised bill, we were actually charged and paid the full amount. The whole experience felt like we were guinea pigs in an ‘how to run a restaurant’ experiment.

Hi Tim, As explained in detail at the time we didn't charge you for our inexpensive burger (£8.50) because you said you were disappointed - when we offered this you said 'oh no don't worry' - but rightly we insisted as it's our standard policy. Your bill was 'high' because you had a 3 course meal with wine (send us your email we can send you a copy of your bill). Having not charged you we're saddened you chose to vent like this in a review before checking any misgivings about billing first.

Does not take cash. Cards only. Food ok, but expensive for what it was. ( Very) small bottle of wine cost £5.00! Not worth the effort to walk (or cycle) there.

We're sorry you didn't enjoy your experience at The Cyclist - single servings of wine are served in 1/4 bottles 187ml and if you look around that's a very reasonable price inline with mass market outlets. We're sorry you thought food was OK - if you could be more specific perhaps we can investigate further. We've elected to avoid cash as it is expensive to manage - both counting up and banking - our approach will become more commonplace.

A friendly welcome for our family group, most chose the roast of the day....succulent pork, spicy apple sauce, crispy roasted potatoes carrots and parsnips, and gravy. Also the added bonus of cauliflower cheese. We all voted it the best roast we had ever tasted. Those who still had room for pud said they were perfect too.

Hi we're really sorry you had a poor experience and we obviously screwed up which happens from time to time (we had a new egg poaching pan which wasn't happening : / ). We encourage customers to complain there and then rather than leave it to the online review so that we can refund you on the spot. Thanks for visiting and once again sincere apologies.

My friend and I had the most superb roast pork with the best crackling ever today. We started with bruschetta with olive tapenade then washed our pork down with Georgian white. I had an affegato and Tanya had the marmalade steamed pudding and custard. Lovely food in a relaxed atmosphere. Busy next week but booked in for venison in two weeks time. Can't wait! Well done Theo this is a little gem.

Really good, simple yet well prepared food. It's so easy to get it right but so few people do and the Cyclist is one of those places. Good, earthy décor and the guy serving was very friendly and welcoming.
