Our magical conservatory restaurant is set amid Updown’s rambling grounds. Dine under the grape vines surrounded by beautiful 17th century brick and watch the chefs in the open kitchen tending to the wood fired grill and original farm house bread oven. The restaurant has been completely transformed by owners Ruth and Oli to be heated and fully enclosed and is open year round.

Menus will be small, hyper seasonal and use the best of local and European produce and change on regular basis to reflect what’s best. Everything is cooked over wood in the open kitchen. There is a short list of exciting wines of limited availability, local beers and seasonal cocktails.

Monday - Friday lunch as well as Monday & Tuesday dinner we have a 3 course set menu along side our full menu at £35. On Wednesday nights along side our full menu we cook a Steak Night menu , priced at £30 per person for 3 courses. On Sunday our restaurant is only open for lunch 12 -4pm.

Updown has several beautiful spaces in which to host your private event. We have a beautiful conservatory Private Dining Room overlooking the farmhouse lawn. It is perfect for groups of 4 to 16 for a seated meal, or up to 20 for a drinks party. The main restaurant can accommodate up to 60 sitting or 150 standing and is ideal for a larger party.

A hidden gem in the beautiful countryside. What used to be a working farm many years ago, has now been transformed into an absolute gem of a restaurant. A nice large car park greets you and a short walk, well signposted, to the restaurant. There we were met by staff who took our coats for us and showed us to our table. The menu was just enough, although perhaps an extra choice on the set menu would be nice. We didn’t go for the set menu and the food was absolutely amazing. It was brought to our table after drinks had been served and we didn’t have to wait long either. From starters to desserts we were well looked after. The seating area was in a converted outbuilding and it has been done to an excellent standard and we felt very comfortable indeed. This was a very enjoyable Friday lunchtime and we will be coming again. Some may say the price is slightly higher than other restaurants but you certainly get a very high standard of food and you won’t be disappointed at all.

The Updown is special. An amazing location, it’s very beautiful. The dining experience is well worth the prices of food and drink. Service is excellent, so I would recommend the restaurant.

The pasta starter with scallops was outstanding. All of the party thought the food was very good indeed.

Lovely lunchtime ambience. Table in a corner looking at an unused door. Very good portions. Fork needed for desserts. Toilets badly situated between kitchen & serving room involving congestion and they need regular checking and updating.

Second time eating here First experience we were disappointed with the food waited over a year then .. Thought we would try again and yet again the food was disappointing Service was friendly and the setting very nice However it’s the food that counts in this type of up market restaurant! Our first course we both had a starter which was tagliatelle with a few chopped scallops with very strong cheese added which overwhelmed the dish, but for me which was worse was that the pasta was lying in bed of oil, far too much oil which I should not have! Second course I had turbot with mussels The turbot was nicely cooked but was swimming in a kind of base stock and the mussels were covered in a sauce which mixed with the watery stock snd the fish so it became messy and looked awful Not good! My husbands mackerel was served almost raw and again laying in a pool of oil which he asked to be drained off The waitress then took the mackerel back to be cooked more and to be fair we were not charged for this dish! The dessert I had was a hazelnut and chocolate mousse Very unimaginative for the price! Overall …Not good enough fo the prices charged The cooking is below standard for this type of supposedly up scale restaurant We won’t be returning which is a shame as it’s a lovely lovely setting but just need a better chef who knows what he’s doing! Come on up your game as at this time I won’t be recommending!

Just returned from a fully relaxing stay and dining at Updown. Had such a wonderful time, the restaurant transports you to another place with its exposed brickwork, rustic mirrors, checkwork tiled flooring, low lighting and abundance of plants. It was quiet but with soft music playing in the background, and it was nice to be able to see the kitchen too which was surprisingly calm and quiet for a restaurant kitchen! They were very accommodating and helpful, getting me a cushion as I am pregnant, and no request too small. They also have a delicious Wild Idol non alcoholic sparkling wine on offer too which went down a treat. It felt like we were in a little oasis for the evening which was perfect for our anniversary. Thank you to the team for taking good care of us!

Came for Sunday Lunch. Everything was lovely, tender meat, beautifully cooked vegetables and the best roast potatoes I have ever had. Definitely a special occasion type of place with beautiful, peaceful grounds.
